Course Overview

This non-accredited course, designed in partnership with experienced trainers from day care and school settings across various regions, provides crucial skills and knowledge for the “child at risk refresher” program, aiming to support and protect children and young people at risk of harm.

In compliance with legislative and policy guidelines, participants in the “child at risk refresher” course will:

  • Learn to identify the signs of different types of abuse and dynamics, taking into account age, gender, disability, culture, and sexuality.
  • Recognize and report potential risk-of-harm scenarios as part of the “child at risk refresher” training.
  • Handle disclosures effectively, asking open and non-leading questions, a key component of the “child at risk refresher” course.
  • Understand and adhere to mandatory reporting laws in your jurisdiction, a vital aspect of the “child at risk refresher” program.
  • Acquire skills to document, record, and report risk-of-harm indicators objectively.
  • Implement workplace practices that bolster the protection of children and young people, reinforced through the “child at risk refresher” training.
  • Apply ethical and compassionate practices in interactions with children and young people.
  • Acknowledge duty of care responsibilities, ethical considerations, mandatory reporting, and confidentiality requirements.

It is recommended to undertake refresher training to align with Regulation 84 of the Education and Care Services National Law, Education and Care Services National Regulations, and Quality Area 2 of the National Quality Standard. The “child at risk refresher” course is designed to help participants update their knowledge of relevant laws and meet their obligations under Regulation 84.

Regulation 84 Awareness of child protection law states “The approved provider of an education and care service must ensure that nominated supervisors and staff members at the service who work with children are advised of—

(a) the existence and application of the current child protection law; and

(b) any obligations that they may have under that law.”

As a Mandatory Reporter, you are legally obligated to report any suspicions of child abuse and neglect to the appropriate government bodies.

Do you feel assured in recognizing signs of abuse and neglect, and do you know the proper procedures for reporting these issues?
