GAS TESTING ATMOSPHERES

This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to recognise and assess conditions that require gas testing; test the working atmosphere using an electronic test apparatus and interpret the results to determine if it is safe for the proposed job activity.

This course applies to situations where an individual may be required to perform gas testing prior to entering a specific area or workspace and whilst work is carried out in the workspace. Atmospheric testing is an important component of confined space work as these working environments may be hazardous, unpredictable, subject to time pressure, chaotic and expose responders to risk, on land or water, by day or night.

Situations that require testing might include:

  • confined spaces
  • enclosed and partially enclosed spaces
  • hot work
  • storage tanks, silos, pits, pipes, shafts, ducts, transport vehicles and ships
  • testing as part of issuing a work permit
  • monitoring as part of working under a work permit
  • open areas
  • holding the gas tester by hand
  • lowering the gas tester into a space, e.g. on a line.

NEED GAS TESTING ATMOSPHERES REFRESHER TRAINING?

Allens Training Quality Assured

There is no pre-course study required for this Gas Testing Atmospheres course.

This nationally recognised unit of competency develops the skills and knowledge required to gas test atmospheres and is designed for workers who may be required to carry out gas testing of an atmosphere before workers enter the workspace area to detect if the area is safe for work. Students must be able to interpret readings and determine the appropriate actions based on their interpretation.

You will learn about common chemical asphyxiates including hydrocarbons, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide and hydrogen sulphide.

You find out about common irritants and corrosives including chlorine, ammonia an acid bases; common flammable gases such as acetylene, petroleum, methane, ethane, propane and butane narcotics (explosive range and upper and lower explosive limits).

You will also learn about exposure standards, conditions under which atmospheres become hazardous, units of measurement to express concentrations of atmospheric contaminants and the skills to interpret and communicate sampling results.

Gas testing atmospheres skills and knowledge covers situations such as confined spaces (partially or fully enclosed), storage tanks, pits, silos, pipes, shafts, ducts, transport vehicles and ships.
