Choose Your Standard 11 Training Format
A Training offers two ways to complete the RIISS00034 mine safety skill set.
Option 1: Two Days of Face-to-Face Training
Attend two full days of training and assessment in Sunnybank Hills.
This option may suit you if you:
- Prefer trainer-led learning
- Want to ask questions while completing the theory
- Learn best in a classroom environment
- Want direct support throughout the course
- Are less confident using an online learning system
The two-day option combines classroom learning, written assessment and hands-on practical training.
Option 2: Online Training and One Face-to-Face Day
Complete the self-paced online training before attending one face-to-face practical and assessment day.
This blended option may suit you if you:
- Prefer to complete theory in your own time
- Are comfortable learning online
- Want to reduce the time spent at the venue
- Can complete all pre-course work before the practical day
This is not a fully online Standard 11 course. The practical assessments must be completed face to face.
Online study time varies between learners. You must complete all online requirements before attending the practical day. Contact A Training if you need help deciding whether the blended format will fit your schedule with mining projects.
Mandatory Practical Assessments
Standard 11 includes written and practical assessments. Attending the course does not automatically mean you will be assessed as competent.
Participants must be physically able to complete tasks that include:
- Performing CPR on the floor for at least two minutes
- Lifting and carrying a 10 kg fire extinguisher
- Applying initial response first aid
- Responding to simulated local emergencies
- Demonstrating local risk control processes
- Using the equipment required for practical training
You may need to kneel, work at floor level, lift equipment and participate in simulated emergency situations.
Contact A Training before enrolling if an injury, disability, medical condition or other circumstance may affect your ability to complete these tasks. The training team can discuss available learner support while protecting the integrity of the assessment.
Entry and Learner Requirements
There are no prerequisite units for this course. A Training advises that applicants should be over 18 years of age.
Participants need:
- Suitable language, literacy and numeracy skills
- The ability to complete written assessments
- The physical ability to complete practical assessments
- Basic computer and internet skills when choosing online training
- Valid photo identification
- A Unique Student Identifier

Unique Student Identifier
A Unique Student Identifier, or USI, creates an online record of nationally recognised training completed in Australia. You need a USI to receive a Statement of Attainment unless an exemption applies.
Language, Literacy and Numeracy Support
An LLN assessment helps the trainer identify whether a participant may need additional assistance. Contact A Training before enrolling if you are unsure about your reading, writing, numeracy or online learning skills.
A free pre-enrolment assessment can help determine whether the course and delivery format are suitable. Additional support may involve a separate cost, depending on the assistance required.
Read A Training's student support information before registering.
What Is a Standard 11 Course?
Standard 11 is the common name for safety training aligned with Queensland's Recognised Standard 11: Training in Coal Mines. It is also sometimes called a Generic Induction or Generic Mine Induction.
Recognised Standard 11 supports the training systems used by Queensland coal mines. Its purpose is to help mines identify and deliver the training needed for competent, safe and efficient work teams.
A Training delivers RIISS00034 Surface Coal Mine Safety Skill Set as its Standard 11 course.
The skill set covers six nationally recognised areas relating to:
- Workplace communication
- Work health and safety
- Mine processes and procedures
- Local risk control
- Initial response first aid
- Local emergencies and incident response
The training prepares participants to work under established procedures in a surface coal mining environment. It does not include the additional competencies that may be required for underground coal mining.
Standard 11 and Queensland Coal Mining Legislation
Recognised Standard 11 forms part of Queensland's coal mining safety framework. The Coal Mining Safety and Health Act 1999 allows recognised standards to state ways of achieving an acceptable level of risk.
In plain language, the recognised standard helps mines build a suitable training system. Each mine must still address its own hazards, work activities and operating procedures.
RIISS00034 provides a nationally recognised Surface Coal Mine Safety Skill Set commonly used as foundational training in the Queensland coal mining industry. A mine may also require workers to complete its own induction process.
Important: The course is not a licence that grants automatic entry to every Queensland coal mine site. Your employer and mine operator remain responsible for determining the training required for your role.
For current regulatory information, refer to Recognised Standard 11: Training in Coal Mines and the Coal Mining Safety and Health Regulation 2017 .
Who Should Complete Standard 11 Training?
RIISS00034 is designed for people who need foundational safety training for work in surface coal mining operations.
It may be suitable for:
- New entrants preparing for surface coal mine work
- Existing coal mine workers directed to complete RIISS00034
- Contractors entering surface coal mining operations
- Tradespeople moving into coal mining work
- Plant, machinery, transport and operational workers
- Other workers whose employer or mine requires the skill set
Requirements depend on the person's role, employer and intended mine. Support workers in cleaning, catering, administration or similar roles should not assume they need RIISS00034 solely because they may enter a mine site.
Confirm the required induction and units with your employer or intended mine before enrolling.
What You Will Learn
The Standard 11 mining induction covers six main safety areas:
- Communicating effectively in the workplace
- Following WHS policies and work procedures
- Identifying hazards and applying local risk control
- Following mine-site processes and instructions
- Applying initial response first aid
- Responding to local emergencies and incidents
Practical training also covers fire prevention, fire equipment and emergency-response activities relevant to the assessment.
The course provides foundational coal mining safety knowledge. Your employer must still provide training and authorisation for your role, work area, equipment and site procedures.
RIISS00034 Units of Competency
Students who successfully complete all training and assessment requirements will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for RIISS00034 Surface Coal Mine Safety Skill Set.
The following units are included:
- RIICOM201E: Communicate in the workplace
- RIIGOV201E: Comply with site work processes/procedures
- RIIWHS201E: Work safely and follow WHS policies and procedures
- RIIRIS201E: Conduct local risk control
- RIIERR205D: Apply initial response first aid
- RIIERR302E: Respond to local emergencies and incidents
The current skill set and its units can be checked on the National Training Register .
Training and assessment are delivered on behalf of Allens Training Pty Ltd RTO 90909.
What Do You Receive After Successful Completion?
Students deemed competent in all required theory and practical assessments receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for the RIISS00034 units.
Attendance alone does not guarantee this outcome. You must successfully complete the course requirements.
Your employer, labour-hire company, recruiter or mine onboarding team may ask for your Statement of Attainment before you continue through its induction process.
You may also need to provide:
- Valid photo identification
- Employer or site-specific induction records
- Role-specific licences or qualifications
- Evidence of relevant experience
- A Coal Mine Workers' Health Scheme assessment
- Other safety or competency records
Certificate processing is managed under the requirements of Allens Training Pty Ltd RTO 90909. Confirm the expected processing timeframe with A Training if you need the Statement of Attainment by a particular date.
Standard 11 and Coal Mine Site Access
RIISS00034 is widely used as a mine safety skill set, but individual operators control access to their sites.
Before booking, ask your employer, recruiter or intended mine:
- Is RIISS00034 the correct course for this role?
- Do I need the full course or refresher training?
- Is this training accepted for the intended coal mine?
- Does the operator have its own induction process?
- Do I need underground competencies?
- Are other licences or qualifications required?
- Do I need a health assessment?
- Is there a preferred training provider or onboarding pathway?
This is particularly important if you intend to work at a BMA mine. A Training does not claim that completing this course provides automatic BMA acceptance. Confirm BMA's current requirements before enrolling.
What to Bring to Your Standard 11 Course
Bring:
- Valid photo identification
- Your Unique Student Identifier
- Your own lunch
- Your own transport
- Cotton drill clothing suitable for practical fire activities
- Enclosed footwear
- Any other items listed in your booking confirmation
Tea and coffee facilities are available. A Training supplies the course materials and equipment required for training.
Plan to arrive at least 15 minutes before the course starts. Late admission is at management's discretion.
Standard 11 and Other Mining Requirements
Standard 11 is one part of preparing for work in the coal mining industry. It does not replace employer onboarding, site induction, medical assessment or role-specific training.
Depending on your role, you may also need:
- A site-specific induction
- Role-specific licences or competency units
- Equipment training and authorisation
- A Coal Mine Workers' Health Scheme assessment
- A construction White Card
- Supervisor competencies
- Underground coal mining competencies
Coal Mine Workers' Health Scheme Assessments
A Coal Mine Workers' Health Scheme assessment was previously called a Coal Board Medical. It is separate from Standard 11 training.
Employers of Queensland coal mine workers must arrange health assessments for the people they employ or intend to employ. Assessments are required before a person starts as a coal mine worker and periodically while employed.
A Training does not provide this assessment as part of RIISS00034. Ask your prospective employer when the process should begin.
Current information is available from Business Queensland's Coal Mine Workers' Health Scheme guide .
Standard 11 and a White Card
Standard 11 and the construction White Card serve different purposes. Standard 11 relates to coal mine safety training. A White Card covers general construction induction. Some positions or projects may require both.
Standard 11 and Supervisor Training
Standard 11 provides foundational safety training for coal mine workers. It does not provide all competencies required for a mine supervisor role.
A worker moving into supervision may need separate supervisor and risk-management units. Completing Standard 11 does not guarantee a supervisory position or higher salary.
View A Training's mine safety courses to compare available pathways.
Standard 11 and Underground Mining
RIISS00034 covers surface coal mining operations. It does not include the additional competencies required for underground work.
Confirm the correct underground training with your employer or intended mine.
Refresher Training and the Five-Year Requirement
Queensland's Coal Mining Safety and Health Regulation requires each coal mine's training scheme to provide refresher training. The site senior executive must ensure coal mine workers receive refresher training under that scheme at least once every five years.
This does not necessarily mean every worker must repeat the same full Standard 11 course. The required refresher pathway can depend on existing competencies, experience and the mine's training scheme.
Ask your employer what evidence and refresher training it requires. If you have already completed the relevant units, view A Training's Standard 11 Refresher course .

Queensland, known for its stunning landscapes and vibrant cities, is also famous for something beneath its surface – coal. The state is home to a significant portion of Australia’s coal mining industry, making it a vital player in the global energy market. So, just how many coal mines are there in Queensland? Let’s dive into the depths to uncover the facts.
The Coal-Rich Queensland
Queensland’s coal industry has a rich history, dating back to the mid-1800s when the first coal mine was established near Ipswich. Since then, the industry has grown significantly, with coal mining operations now scattered across various regions of the state.
Counting the Mines
As of September 2021, there were approximately 50 coal mines in Queensland. These mines were distributed across the state, with major coal-producing regions including the Bowen Basin, Surat Basin, and Galilee Basin. Each of these regions is known for specific types of coal, from thermal coal used for electricity generation to metallurgical coal essential for steel production.
Major Coal-Producing Regions
- Bowen Basin: This region, located in central Queensland, is one of the most significant coal-producing areas in the state. It’s home to numerous coal mines, including some of the largest in Australia. The Bowen Basin primarily produces metallurgical coal, which is in high demand for global steelmaking.
- Surat Basin: Situated in southern Queensland, the Surat Basin is known for its substantial reserves of thermal coal. These coals are primarily used in electricity generation, both locally and internationally.
- Galilee Basin: The Galilee Basin, in central Queensland, has gained attention due to its massive coal reserves. While several mining projects have been proposed for this region, their development status can vary over time.
The Changing Landscape
It’s essential to note that the number of coal mines in Queensland can change due to various factors, including market demand, environmental regulations, and economic conditions. As the world increasingly looks towards cleaner energy sources and sustainability, the coal industry faces evolving challenges.
A Transition in Progress
Queensland is also investing in renewable energy projects, such as wind and solar farms, as part of its transition to a more sustainable energy future. This shift acknowledges the importance of diversifying the state’s energy portfolio while addressing environmental concerns.
In conclusion, Queensland’s coal mining industry has been a significant contributor to the state’s economy and the global energy market. As of 2021, there were around 50 coal mines in Queensland, each playing a unique role in providing coal for various purposes. However, it’s important to recognize that the energy landscape is evolving, with a growing emphasis on cleaner and more sustainable alternatives to coal. The future of coal mining in Queensland will likely be shaped by these changing dynamics, as the state continues to balance economic growth with environmental responsibility. Australia Minerals Government Department has provided – Map of Queensland Coal Mines.
The Coal Board Medical (formally known as the Coal Mine Workers’ Health Scheme) protects the health of Queensland Coal Mine Workers, the Scheme ensures workers undergo compulsory health assessments. This includes an assessment when workers prior to entering the industry and then at least every 5 years while employed in the Coal Mining Industry.
The Coal Board Medical (Health Scheme) is not limited to current Coal Mine workers, the Scheme extends to retiring and former Coal Mine Workers on a voluntary basis.
Coal Mine Employers of Queensland Coal Mine Workers must ensure that health assessments are carried out on each person they employ or intend to employ.
This guide explains the requirements of the Scheme, including recent changes made as part of the Queensland Government’s response to mine dust lung disease.
For more information, select the links below:
The purpose of the Coal Mine Workers’ Health Scheme (CMWHS) is used to determine fitness for work, and to provide early diagnosis and intervention for respiratory diseases like coal mine workers’ pneumoconiosis and silicosis. It does this by:
- screening coal mine workers to detect early signs of disease
- referring workers for follow-up, diagnosis and management, if required
- reducing dust exposure for workers with respiratory abnormalities
- collecting, analysing and reporting data to support reviews of dust exposure levels and occupational exposure limits for coal mines.
